Lovely Vocabulary: Twerking

OMG you guys? Did you hear the news?! The esteemed Oxford English Dictionary has announced that it will now add the word “twerk” (it’s a verb in case you were wondering) to its listings along with other words commonly used in pop culture.

It’s official definition you ask? “[To] dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance”

Apparently also involving low self-esteem among other things.

Seriously, when did I turn into such an old 30-something-year-old fogey? But does anyone really want to be using the phrase “that daughter of mine better not be caught twerking any time soon!” or, as the Oxford Dictionary online so helpfully provides, “Twerk it, girl!”

Thanks, Miley. NOT. (Also, please stick your abnormally long tongue back in your mouth – it’s not sexy. Just strange and desperate looking.)

UPDATE: Morgan Freeman defines twerking for us all – cuz, ya know, everything sounds more refined when Morgan’s saying it 😉

  1. I feel equally old if it makes you feel better. I kinda wanted to gag each time I caught a glimpse of her VMA dancing. Ugh.
