This is my favorite time of all the year in Los Angeles. The sun is shining (but isn’t it always?), the weather is glorious and there are outdoor movies galore! Pre-baby one of our favorite summer activities to do would be to pack a picnic and a bottle of wine, grab our lawn chairs and head on out to one of the many outdoor movie events that go on around the city through the summer. Post-baby, it doesn’t happen as much (sitters are expensive!), but I’m still determined to hit up a few of these this summer.
Cinespia – probably my favorite one. Where else do you get to watch a classic or modern favorite in a cemetery, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery to be exact? I’m just sad I missed Clueless last weekend. It would also be fun to see the upcoming Pulp Fiction or Princess Bride there. There’s also a DJ spinning in the hours before the movie starts (gates usually open around 7:30 and it doesn’t get really dark until closer to 9), so bring your friends, board games, and blankets for later on because it gets chilly! Tickets are $12.
Street Food Cinema – Food trucks and outdoor movies combine for a one-stop shop. On the slate for this summer includes classics such as St. Elmo’s Fire, Jaws and Risky Business, as well as contemporary film Pitch Perfect, Silver Linings Playbook and Shaun of the Dead (one of my absolute faves.) All screenings take place downtown in Exposition Park and the rotation of food trucks has me drooling already. Tickets range from $10-15.
Eat|See|Hear – Similar to the above but with rotating venues.
Oscars Outdoors – The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences started hosting their own outdoor movie nights featuring a mix of old and new films. Screenings are held at the organization’s Hollywood campus and kicks off June 5th with a showing of Joss Whedon’s (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing. Every Friday will be adult-oriented movies, while Saturdays will be more family-friendly fare.
Dive-In Movie Night – That’s right, a DIVE-in! When the weather gets hot, cool off in the pool while the whole family enjoys a movie! Held at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena, this year’s dates are still to be announced, but c’mon, how much fun does that sound?
Electric Dusk Drive-In – I haven’t tried this one yet, but I’ve been dying to. The whole concept of a drive-in spells nostalgic fun for me. And, if you’re parents of a newborn, this is perfect! Baby will sleep in the carseat while you guys enjoy a mini-date night all from the comfort of your car. We did this once when Little Miss was first born and it was super fun! This one takes place in Downtown LA and will be showing such greats as “Office Space” (“but..but…that’s my stapler”) and “Vertigo”.
There are many more out there, too many to last but these few should get you started. Happy watching!
