Relax to Produce? (And a little more Hathahate)

Apparently I’m not the only Hathahater (seriously, go watch BAFTA speech above  and tell me you don’t want to punch her in the nose) and now  the level of annoyance is at an all-time high! This is my favorite tweet about She of the Eyeroll-Inducing Speeches:

Anywho, moving on… so an op-ed piece from the NY Times this week argues that relaxing more makes you more productive. At first, I thought, “yeah, right,”‘ but all the points the author makes strikes true for me.  According to the piece, “in a study of nearly 400 employees, published last year, researchers found that sleeping too little — defined as less than six hours each night — was one of the best predictors of on-the-job burn-out.” What do you think? I know most nights I’m lucky to get 6-7 hours of sleep, and I definitely have that slump in the middle of my workday where I just don’t want to do anything. Would that be different if I started sleeping 8-10 hours? And apparently workers who take more frequent vacations are happier and more productive. This totally makes sense to me – think of the renewed vigor and energy you feel after a week off – just some dedicated time to shut your brain off one way makes a world of difference.

It also suggests that maximum productivity is achieved by working in 90-minute increments. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of this, and I”m totally going to try it this week. Maybe the mountains of laundry, empty fridge, and non-walked dogs will bear the fruits of my new efficiency. Who’s in?
